🍌 Why Bananas Are Bad Luck on a Fishing Charter Boat

When guests step onto our boat for a day of fishing, they usually come armed with sunblock, snacks, and big expectations. But there’s one item I don’t want to see onboard — and it might surprise you it’s bananas.
That’s right. In the fishing world, bananas are considered serious bad luck.
And trust me — I’ve had some bad encounters with bananas over the years. Enough to take this superstition seriously.
I’m writing this blog not just for fun, but to help you understand why we ask you not to bring bananas on the charter. It might sound crazy, but after what I’ve seen, you won’t catch me taking chances.
🚢
The Origins of the Banana Curse
Like most superstitions, this one goes way back with a mix of mystery, history, and a little seafaring drama.
1. Fast Ships, No Bites
In the 1700s, fast-moving cargo ships were used to transport bananas before they spoiled. These ships moved so quickly that fishermen onboard rarely caught anything trolling behind. No fish = bad luck = blame the bananas.
2. Poison and Pests
Bananas sometimes harbored venomous spiders or gave off gases that spoiled other fruit — or worse, sickened the crew. It didn’t take long before bananas were linked with danger.
3. Lost at Sea
There are tales of ships that vanished or sank — all with bananas in the cargo hold. Coincidence? Maybe. But try convincing me otherwise.

Modern-Day Bananas on Boats
Today, the superstition is still alive and well — especially on fishing charters. As funny as it sounds, we’ve seen trips turn upside-down over a single banana:
Engines mysteriously stalling
Lines snapping
Weather suddenly turning
Entire schools of fish vanishing or just not feeding
😅
Funny Stories from the Water
We’ve had it all:
A client once brought a banana and my timing belt broke on engine and we needed to get towed back in. The damage was so catastrophic that I needed to replace engine.
Another had banana muffin — the bite turned off within minutes.
One trip, a guy had a banana in his backpack he forgot about. The fish didn’t start biting until we found it and got rid of it.
Call it superstition, but after enough trips on the water, patterns start to stand out.
